Smart Parking Systems: Combination Of Technologies And Utilities For Users

With modernity and convenience, the management and operation of smart parking systems have become smoother, quicker and safer, helping to save time and costs.

Modern equipment used in smart parking systems

Smart parking systems apply modern technology (IoT, Big Data, smart cameras and sensors, etc.) to control vehicles entering and exiting. This is a complete combination of access cards, surveillance cameras, safety sensors, security guards... Opposite to traditional ways, the vehicle can access in just a few seconds, fast and easy to control information by digitizing license plates, vehicle images, driver images, etc.

Access cards

To control means of entry and exit, there need to be cards to store information registered in the management system. When someone enters or exits the parking lot, just show a valid access card and the barrier will automatically open. In addition, all data collected will be saved on the management system and managers can query immediately when necessary. There are two types of access cards used in the smart parking systems: for monthly or visiting Customers.

The parking attendant will swipe the access card at the entrance and hand it to the vehicle owner. The cameras will contemporarily capture the license plate, the image of the driver, the date and time the vehicles entered and the information will be stored on the system. When leaving, the driver needs to stop in front of the speed bump and give the right access card. The system will capture the license plate number to compare with previous data. If the results match, the system will automatically display the fee amount; otherwise, a warning signal will be issued. In this case, depending on the parking lot's regulations, the management board will have an appropriate solution.

Access control reader and automatic card issuing machine

After receiving the signal from the access cards, the access control reader will transmit it to the management software to process the data. There are currently two commonly used types of access control readers used in smart parking systems: short-range (usually used for motorbikes) or long-range access control readers (reserved for cars).

Automatic card-issuing machines are often used at free parking lots, shopping centers, bus stations... Drivers only need to press the button at the machine and receive an access card to enter the lot without any parking attendant. This is the best choice to optimize costs for parking lots.

Smart camera

There are several cameras used to record images of the vehicles, license plate numbers and drivers. The data will be transferred to the management system for storage and comparison when needed. Normally, cameras used in the system need to have high-resolution and sharp images. In particular, smart license plate recognition technology uses optical character recognition (OCR) to read images containing license plates. So that license plate images can be converted into text characters for storage and comparison analysis.

Automatic barrier

The automatic barrier plays a similar role as an entrance gate, with a built-in anti-collision sensor when encountering obstacles. The smart barrier can open and close automatically, to notify drivers to slow down and assist in controlling vehicles in the parking lot. As a result, regulation activities in parking lots become faster and more convenient, avoiding congestion during peak hours.

However, in reality, this equipment is installed depending on usage needs as well as the size of the lot. With low access density, it is not necessary to install an automatic barrier to save costs. On the contrary, in the larger ones, this equipment is necessary to ensure the overall operation.

Computer and data control software

In a smart parking lot, the central controller includes a high-configuration computer system and modern software, helping to receive and process input information and issue commands for the system to operate after processing and checking information. The computer system is synchronized with the general management system and can be controlled remotely if needed.

Through cameras, sensors and information transmission systems, the central controller will receive images and information from the access control reader and send the data to the management software. Next, the information is compared and checked. If the data is correct, the barrier will automatically open. These processes are automatic to have commands quickly such as allowing vehicles to enter and exit or notifying costs, ensuring smooth circulation even during peak times.

All daily information is encrypted and stored at the central controller, helping managers easily query, manage, inventory and calculate profits by day, week, month... Particularly, the parking management software is often flexibly tailored specifically for each parking lot and usage needs of the Investor, helping the system operate better. However, it is necessary to update the software to the latest version to help control the vehicles tightly and avoid data theft.

Outstanding advantages of smart parking systems

Smart parking lots are becoming increasingly popular because of the flexibility and efficiency that the management is more propitious as well as user satisfaction and experience increases. Smart parking systems have overcome the limitations of traditional parking methods and bring advantages such as information stored on the system to help management easily access and have prompt solutions in special situations. Outstanding advantages of smart parking systems:

  • Monitor, control and manage the number of vehicles entering and exiting potently and quickly.
  • Minimize theft rate and increase safety.
  • Easily extract information and promptly handle solutions in special situations.
  • Improve traffic congestion at the parking lot during peak hours.
  • Access cards have their codes, making them difficult to counterfeit, increasing security.
  • Optimize costs and save human resources in parking lot management and operation.
  • Manage revenue effectively and accurately by quick data extraction and reporting.
